Been a busy week here at Midday HQ (the living room of my apartment). For those who missed them, we played two shows this past week, one at a private Halloween party with our friends, Terrazzo, and another at 529 with other friends of The Skip, Fly-By Drivers and Superjaw. Both shows went well, everybody was chill, and we want to thank those who came out for making it such a blast.
Terrazzo, as usual, brought the thunder and the fury. They played a nice mix of songs old and new, and I'm always struck by what a good job Alex does as dual guitar shredder and screaming frontman. This is not to discount Aaron always killing it behind the drums and Jacob with the might of his Thunderbird, but Alex seems like he was made for the task. Everyone was headbanging in every manner of costume like some kind of Dethklok crossover episode. Shoutout to the guy who did Alex Jones with his tinfoil hat and gay frogs.
Fly-By put on an amazing performance. I've never seen so much moshing at an indie/surf show. I loved the new songs they did, and they sounded like the whole band wrote them. Lots of keyboard lines and interlocking parts that were well-rehearsed and tight, so it'll be interesting to hear their style develop further. They brought lots of energy and get better every time I see them.
Superjaw played a cool post-grunge set of covers and originals. They did a unique version of Nirvana's “Something in the Way” where they played it with a double-time feel and brought the energy up at the end. It was an interesting take and worked well.
We did fine, thank you for asking. No major issues except when I kept stepping on my cable and unplugging my bass because I, like a child with Baby's First Stratocaster, had not hooked it through my strap. We played more or less “A Home,” “Waiting and Hoping and Knowing,” “Huffin' Sunshine,” and “Blood on My Sandals.” We added CCR's “Fortunate Son” for the 529 show in honor of election night and “Sherbet Sunrise” along with “Atlas” for the Halloween show because the former is fun and the latter is a bit unsettling. Want to also say that the sound at 529 was amazing and probably the best we've ever sounded live. Morgan at the board did a great job, so we're excited to head back as soon as we can. We're still fighting each other about the exact dates for release, but now the general plan is to release the album sometime early December with possibly a single or two out between now and then. Thanks to everyone for streaming Blood on My Sandals so far, and didn't Alex do a great job on the mix? He's the true fifth Skipper.
